The importance of primary prevention
The shadow pandemic of violence that arrived alongside the COVID-19 pandemic challenged the resiliency of Alberta’s civil society sector. Many organizations faced massive increases in requests for support or increasingly complex cases of violence. IMPACT responded in an unprecedented way to share knowledge and resources to support an innovative sector response.
The new demands for support added urgency to IMPACT’s work to stop violence before it starts, which is called primary prevention. The expertise developed in addressing violence yields valuable insight into how we can engage in this work.
Stopping violence is an ambitious goal, which requires research into the best approaches; long-term, stable funding, and the collective action of the civil society sector. This won’t be a short journey, but it is a vital one.
